The Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) Program provides challenging curriculum and instruction to gifted and talented students in California capable of achieving significantly beyond the level of their peers. Often even a good quality educational program is not sufficiently challenging for a student with special gifts or talents. GATE funds are used to design and deliver a supplemental differentiated program for individuals or groups of gifted and talented students with special needs.
Districts throughout California use GATE funding to develop talent in students in grades K-12 and to provide services to students who need challenges beyond what the regular education program can offer. It can be used to raise student achievement by ensuring that students with unusual potential are encouraged to achieve at their own rates, rather than being content with grade-level performance. Teachers throughout California are benefiting from the excellent professional development opportunities available through GATE. As teachers learn to better differentiate instruction to meet the needs of gifted and talented pupils, all students will benefit.
